Miss Lilly's Christmas Party
History of the Christmas Party
Back around 1965,
over 50 years ago, Lilly Serna saw a need in her little community of Maxwell
Texas. She saw that the children needed
Christmas. At that time Miss Lilly had a
bar there named the Silver Barn. She
decided to get with the ladies in the community and take care of that
need.
In the early
years the Maxwell Volunteer Fire Department truck would wind its way through
the town with Santa on board and the children would run out of their houses and
follow Santa to the bar. They were
greeted there by Miss Lilly and they all received 3 tamales (made by the local
ladies), a gift, and a bag of fruit and candy.
When Miss Lily moved into Lockhart and opened Lilly’s Bar she continued
the tradition and began including children from all around the area.
Over the years the
Christmas Party has grown, now giving presents to over 1000 children every
year, along with cakes donated by local businesses, and yes, they still get
their bag of fruit and candy! With the
support and help of her family, the community and lots of friends the tradition
continues.
In 2014 Miss
Lilly, at 82 years old, celebrated the 50th annual Children’s
Christmas Party!! This had long been a
goal of hers and despite health issues she made sure it happened. Sadly, Miss Lilly left us on February 4,
2015. She will always be remembered for
her big heart and her love of people.
As you can
imagine, a lot of work and money go into making the Christmas Party
happen. There are various fund raisers
all through the year and they will all be listed on the donations page here as
they are scheduled. One of the largest
events has become the motorcycle Toy Run, raising almost $12,000 in 2014. This event was a favorite of Miss Lilly’s and
she always referred to the riders who participate as “her bikers”. More information about that event can be
found on the Toy Run page here, including this year’s date.
Join Lilly’s
daughter Lydia, the family, community and her bikers in helping to continue
Miss Lilly’s legacy. No children are
ever turned away from the party, and no volunteers or donations will be
either!! Be sure to join us the Sunday
before Christmas at the party and enjoy the children’s faces, it’s an
experience you’ll never forget! Details
about this year’s party can be found on the Christmas party page, and photos
from earlier events are there for you to enjoy in our photo gallery.
Thank you for
stopping by and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
